Event Coordinator’s Letter

Greetings Soaring Enthusiast!

It’s that time of year again when the promise of warm weather and green grass signal the arrival of the sailplane contest season. This year’s Gateway Soaring Open will be for Unlimited Class sailplanes and will consist of both Expert and Sportsman categories. We will fly a man-on man format with 4 to 6 man flight groups. Saturday and Sunday are AMA sanctioned as separate contests to assist those needing points for their LSF qualifications. There will be trophies thru 5th place in Expert and first thru third place in Sportsman as well as an Overall Weekend Champion Trophy based on the combined scores from both contest days.

We will get as many rounds in as possible with Task T-1 International Duration as listed in the AMA Rule Book. The landing task will be L-4 Spot Landing as per the AMA Rule Book.

We will have an HLG contest on Friday at the sod farm for those who wish to come early and enjoy the open spaces of the sod farm. The HLG contest will start at 9am and end at approx. 3pm to allow for an open field so others can fly and practice for the weekend’s events.

Saturday and Sunday’s contestant’s meeting will start at 9:00am. Registration will open around 8:00am for the early birds. Round #1 will commence at 9:30am. Lunch will be provided as part of the entry fee for all contestants. Any additional meals can be purchased early the morning of the contest day and prior to when we place the order. There are also a number of fast food joints within just a few minutes of the field as well.

On behalf of the Mississippi Valley Soaring Association, we look forward to your flying with us and we wish you safe travel to the contest. If we can be of help in anyway, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Our club’s mission is to host the a contest you will come back to again!
